Differences between perfume, eau de parfum and eau de toilette

In the world of perfumery, there are different fragrance concentrations that directly affect the intensity, longevity and price of a product. Terms like “perfume”, “eau de parfum” and “eau de toilette” are common, but do you really know what each one means?

What is a perfume (extract or parfum)?

It’s the most concentrated form of fragrance, usually containing between 20% and 30% essential oils. This gives it a longevity of over 12 hours on the skin. Because it’s more intense, it’s recommended to apply in small amounts, preferably at night or on special occasions.

What is an eau de parfum (EDP)?

It has a concentration between 15% and 20%. It’s the most popular format thanks to its balance of longevity (6-8 hours), intensity and price. Ideal for daily wear or events, depending on the scent.

What is an eau de toilette (EDT)?

Lighter, with a concentration from 5% to 15%. It lasts around 3 to 5 hours. Perfect for warm weather or those who prefer softer, fresher scents. Often used during the day.

Quick comparison:

  • Perfume: Highly concentrated, long-lasting, more expensive.

  • Eau de parfum: Balanced, ideal for daily use, good longevity.

  • Eau de toilette: Light, affordable, ideal for day or summer.

Which one to choose?

It depends on your needs:

  • For special occasions or nights: Perfume or EDP.

  • For work or warm weather: EDT or light EDP.

  • If you want freshness and save money: EDT.
